Take home essay:  Relate your novel-based project to the five criteria, 163 ff. for powerful teaching and learning in the social studies, in Expectations for Excellence, pp. 157ff.   Two pg. max double spaced, default settings.  20 points

Read the articles in your packet:  Integrating Curriculum by Shanahan, et al, and Projects and Activities:  A Means not an End, by Reed. Plan to write to the first prompt below, without notes.  Choose two from prompts 2, 3, 4  for short essays to complete without notes in class, Wednesday, April  29, 2009, 10:00
Use CBMSS, the criteria for contemporary SS, your notes and reading, and significant particular and detailed examples in your essays. Please provide your own lined paper.
 

Five points each.  Must do #1 and two more.

1. Explain what Shanahan et al mean by the “pitfalls of thematic units.”  Summarize Reed’s arguments for use of caution and application of criteria regarding “hand-on” activities.  Repeat at least one of Reed’s negative examples in your summary.  

2. Explain the importance of the study of the Columbus Event in K12  SS curriculum. Suggest topics and activities for this study.

3. Explain the importance of the study of the population problem and related issues in the K-8 SS curriculum.  Suggest topics and activities for this study.  Incorporate the main idea from your reading of the Ellen Goodman essay, 10-25-99, "Earth's population can be slowed one at a time"..

4. Explain the most widely accepted theory of origin of April Fools Day.  Discuss the calendar and solstice festivals as a source of  SS curriculum.  Conclude your discussion by explaining holidays as an approach to diversity curriculum, their advantages and disadvantages
