- Discussion questions: What causes a flood? What is an Ark? Why is this book called Nora's Ark? After reading the book discuss the Author's note at the end
of the book then discuss the effects of the 1927 flood had on the
people of Vermont.
- Language arts: Compare Nora's Ark with On Noah's Ark by Jan
Brett. How are they alike? How are they different? Discuss what is
"gravy" in your life. (wants and needs.
- Writing: Write a journal from the point of view of Wren, her
grandmother, her grandfather, or one of the animals..
- Math: Graph all the people and animals that came to stay
with Wren and Grandmother during the flood.
- Science: Research floods and flooding throughout
the United States. Study natural disasters and what causes them.
- Social Studies: Check out the photos on the Vermont history websites
that show pictures of the 1927 flooding. Learn about life on a
farm then and now.
- Drama: Perform a Reader's Theater based on the book
Nora's Ark.
- Cooking/Food: Make homemade bread together and eat
this along with dried apples.
- Art: Make your own farm picture using watercolor
paints. Draw a picture of a natural disaster such as a flood,
storm, hurricane, tornado, etc.
- Music: Sing songs such as Old McDonald Had a Farm or Row, Row, Row Your Boat..
- Technology: Make a PowerPoint presentation about
the 1927 Vermont Flood, or make a Kidspiration picture of the farm animals that
were in the story.
