Book Activities

- Art and/or Writing: Continue the story from the point
where Mama is been reunited with Grandma
and Ada Ruth.
- Point of View: Tell the story from Mama's point of
view. What kind of experiences did Mama have in Chicago?
- Guest: Invite a community member
or relative who lived during World War II to speak to the class or
library.
- Research: Learn about the home front, and the role of
women and/or African Americans during World War II. Use the
famous Rosie the Riveter poster as a starting point. Discuss the
Tuskegee Airmen.
- Music: Bring in music from the World War II
Era: Big Bands, Blues, and Jazz (Duke Ellington, Count Basie,
Ella Fitzgerald, etc.)
- Art: Create a diorama inspired by the story.
- Language: Write letters to a loved one who lives far
away. Or write a letter from Ada Ruth's to her mother.
