: Dear World

A poetic book filled with illustrations that capture the joy of discovery as a child explores his colorful world  by pointing out its many wonders and simple pleasures.

Book Activities

    • Discussion questions: Discuss free verse poems. Point out the collage art technique. Which poem is your favorite? Which picture do you like best?
    • Language arts: Discuss the author's lack of capitals and punctuation. Copy poems to transparency and add punctuatioin. Compare poems to other Monarch books: Tulips/ Boxes for Katje, Trees/Our Tree Named Steve, Turtles/Owen and Mzee, Car/ If I Built a Car.
    • Writing: Write your own Dear World poem and illustrate it.
    • Math: Count the stars, birds, houses, apples on each page.
    • Science: Keep a nature journal of observations. Research the plants, animals, etc. that you record.
    • Social Studies: How can we protect the plants and animals of our world?
    • Drama: Videotape students reading the poems
    • Cooking/Food: Read the title poem and taste fruit or berries.
    • Art: Make collages of nature with primary colors.
    • Music:
    • Movement: Make up actions to accomany the poems such as trees swaying in the wind or fish swimming in the sea.
    • Technology: Make nature images in Kid Pix to accompany your poems.
