In eigthteenth-century Korea, after Sang-hee's father injures his ankle, Sang-hee attempts to take over the task of lighting the evening fire which signals to the palace that all is well.

    • Discussion questions: What ways do we use to communicate today? What ways were use hundreds of years ago? What does it mean to be responsible?
    • Language arts: Tell about a time when you had to help a grown up.
    • Writing: What if Sang-Hee had not lit the fire? Make up a new ending for the story.
    • Math:
    • Science: Study the uses of fire.
    • Social Studies: Find Korea on a map. Research the history of the country.
    • Drama: Pair students and have them debate whether to light the fire.

    • Art: Draw a mountain and use red, orange and yellow tissue paper to make signal fires.
