When she outgrows Flash, her favorite bike and best friend, Sally Jean collects old bicycle parts to make a new bike, and gives Flash to a young friend who is in desperate need of a bigger bike.

Book Activities

    • Discussion questions:  Where did you get your last bike? What did you do with your old bike? Does your bike  have a name? What do you like about Sally Jean?
    • Language arts: Compare to If I Built a Car.
    • Writing: Tell a story about how your got your bike or a adventure on your bike.
    • Math: Investigate bicyle prices. Graph the colors of bicycles owned by the students. Find out about the Tour de France. How fast can a person go on a bike? How far to they ride?
    • Science: Study simple machines–the wheel. Research the invention of the bicycle.

    • Art: Make bicycle safety posters.
    • Music: Sing Bicycle Built for Two.
    • Movement: Lay on your back, brace hips with arms, and bicycle upside down.
    • Technology: Make a Kidspiraton picture of things with wheels.
    • Activity: Have a "Bike-a-thon" where kids pledge minutes to ride bikes to become more fit. Have a reward if they meet their goal.
