When a lonely spider decides to try and become a pet, she winds up frightening her adopted family unil one day whe manages to unknowingly impress them.

Book Activities

    • Discussion questions:  What is a phobia? Why do people dislike spiders? What other insects or animals cause people to go Aaaarrgghh!
    • Language arts: Compare this story with Hi, Fly Guy. What is alike; what is different?
    • Writing: Write a diary from the point of view of another small creature.
    • Math: Count the spiders at the end. How many legs would they have?
    • Science: Research spiders. Compare fiction and nonfiction books.
    • Social Studies: Compare the Ananse folk tales.

    • Cooking/Food:
    • Art: Design decorative webs with glue and glitter or yarn. Make thumbprint spiders.
    • Music: Sing Itsy Bitsy Spider.
    • Movement: With back toward the floor, walk spider style on your arms and legs.
