I. TEXTBOOK: McGuigan and Moyer, Managerial Economics,
7th ed. 1996
II. INTRODUCTION: Managerial economics is the study
of the firm and how it makes its decisions under constraints imposed by
the laws of nature and society. The study of the activities of the firm
overlaps microeconomics theory, operation analysis, etc., and employs
the tools of mathematics, linear programming, and statistics.
III. OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE: The objective of the
course is to enhance understanding of the nature and operation of the
economics system of the firm. The objective should lead us to a better
realization of the overall allocation of resources.
IV. COURSE OUTLINE: This course is divided into six
parts.
1. Review of Statistics
2. Mathematical Tools
3. Analysis of Demand
4. Analysis of Production and Cost
5. Analysis of Price, Output, and Public Policies
6. Capital Budgeting
V. GRADING PROCEDURE: The mathematical tools are essential
for full appreciation of this course and a stepping stone for comprehension
of managerial economics; hence homework is highly emphasized.
