I have modified our class feed in several ways:

1. The arstechnica feed has been discontinued

2. Items older than the last collaborative grade check have been filtered out

Don't forget to sign your RSS feed items

Several RSS feed items have come through without attribution, i.e. we don't know who contributed them. When you create an item for your RSS feed, we will all see it and it needs to be signed by you. An RSS feed item must be original. The text you write has to be your own. Please don't provide links without any explanation of what they are, their purpose, or their relationship to the course. Also, please don't just connect your feed to another RSS feed so that items posted on that feed automatically come through yours. While that might work fine for a personal feed, it doesn't work so well for our class feeds.

Thanks,
Important Information Regarding Your Class Feed

Here is some important information regarding RSS feeds for the class:

1. I will be aggregating all student feeds into a single feed that you will need to subscribe to. So in addition to subscribing to my feed for the class and the class blog feed, you will need to subscribe to the class student feed. The link I am providing here is the link to your class student feed. If you are using a browser like Firefox or IE7, click on this link and it will take you directly to the page containing the feed , where you can click on the subscribe button (or right click on it, select "copy shortcut", and paste it into your reader. If you are using SharpReader, just right click on the link and paste it into address box. Alternatively, you can use the regular web page, click on RSS Feeds, find your course, and find Select student feed for this course you only need right click on the link provided, select "copy shortcut," and paste the url into your reader.
2. All of the feeds you create will be aggregated into that single feed.
3. When your feed is set up, be sure to email me the feed url (in WebCT) and I will add to the aggregated student feed.

Note that because your feeds are all being aggregated together (which makes it a lot less trouble to subscribe ... a single feed instead of one feed for each other individual in the class), you will not be readily identifiable when you post. Be sure to put your name at the bottom of each of the items you post so that the rest of us will know who contributed the item. That is safe, since this feed is not available to the general public.

Thanks,

Dr. Garrett

Cool Utility for Troubleshooting

Here's a utility that can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about a system from the current temperature of the hard drives to the open ports. This is highly recommended for your troubleshooting toolbox and the best news is that it doesn't need to be installed and will run, therefore, from a memory stick.

Naming Your Feed

Make sure your feed has your name in it, i.e. "Joe Smith's Feed." That is done in the title of your feed in FeedForAll. Just putting something like "Feed" doesn't let us see what the feed is.

If you get a feed and you want to change the name of it in your reader, SharpReader lets you rename a feed yourself. After subscribing to the feed, just right click on the feed subscription and select "rename."
