What To Do About Alice?

Theodore Roosevelt had a small problem. Her name was Alice. Alice Lee Roosevelt was hungry to go places, meet people, and do things! Father called it "running riot." Alice called it "eating up the world."

Book Activities

    • Discussion questions:  Do you know who Alice Roosevelt was? Alice was "running riot". What does that mean? What do you think her father, Teddy Roosevelt, should have done? Should she have behaved differently? What game do you like to play with your father?
    • Reading/oral language: Gather biographies of strong women. Read and report  on them during Women's History Month (March). Read about Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone like Alice did.
    • Writing: Write a story about you running riot. "What to do about_____"
    • Math: List all the cities Alice visited or lived in. Make math problems to figure out the distance between them.
    • Science: Look up different kinds of snakes would make good pets.
    • Social Studies: Research Teddy Roosevelt and Alice on World Book Online or other online encyclopedia.What is a boarding school? Would you like to attend one? Could you teach yourself by reading all the books in the library? Map the cities and countries Alice visited in the story.
    • Cooking/Snack: Find recipies for scrambled eggs. Make scrambled eggs as a snack for the class.
    • Art/Drama: Try mixing paints to create Alice blue. Make a list of objects that are Alice blue. What is your favorite color? Wear it to school or make a picture using it.
    • Music/Movement: Consult with the music teacher about popular songs from Alice Roosevelt's youth. Find out about the Two Step and the Fox Trot dance and try it. Watch dancing with the stars!
    • Technology integration:  Make a timeline of Alice's life. Type your "what to do about' story in Word.
