Nominee:
Andy Shane and the Very Bossy Dolores Starbuckle
Andy Shane doesn't
like school. In particular, he doesn't like Delores Starbuckle,
the class know-it-all who bosses him around every day.
Thankfully, Andy has a very wise and understanding grandmother named
Granny Webb, who helps Andy find what he needs to teach Delores a
lesson!

Activities
|
- Discussion questions: Do
you know any kids who hate school? Why? What
does it mean to be bossy? What are some ways children bully other
children?
- Reading/oral language: Find
the similes in the book, i.e. "a voice like a squeaky fiddle" Say
the rhyming words that were used in the story; then have the students
make a list of rhyming words. Make a reader's theater of a
conversation between Delores and Andy or Delores and Granny. Think of
action words/verbs.
- Writing: Write about a time
when you have been bullied.
- Math: Make patterns using pattern blocks.
- Science: Make a bug
collection. Use a nature guide to identify the bugs. Study insects
including the bugs that were mentioned in the story, Monarch Butterfly,
dragonfly, house fly, and firefly. Learn some scientific names for
common insects.
- Social Studies:
Talk about family relationships. How was Andy's granny important to him. How about
your grandparents? Celebrate Grandparent's day in September.
- Cooking/Snack: "Ants on a
Log" Take a stalk of celery and fill it with peanut butter. Then,
put raisins on the peanut butter. Eat and enjoy! Research insects
eaten by people in other parts of the world.
- Art/Drama: Draw insects with
pencils and paint with water colors, like on the back of the book.
- Music/Movement:
Role play manners charade style. Students draw a "situation" and
demonstrate the polite way to act. For example,
walk quietly, raise hand before speaking, using please and thank you,
etc.
- Technology integration: Use
shapes in Kid Pix or Kidspiration to make a pattern block picture.
- Compare to other Monarchs: Velma Gratch and the way cool
butterfly
