Nominee: My
Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks and Other Funny Family Portraits
In this
book everyday objects are used by the narrator to create portraits of
their family. Pepperoni, baseball bats, horns and many other common
objects were turned into noses, eyes. and mouths. The book could be an
introduction for a variety of fun activities.

- Discussion questions: What do you notice about the
illustrations in this book? Do you like collage illustrations?
- Reading/oral language: Brainstorm words to describe
yourself, your family and pets. Discuss similes.
- Writing: Create similes for yourself, pets, friends or
family members.
- Math: Count objects in the book or make up problems such
as: How many eyes would you need to make five family members and one
dog? Group objects used by color.
- Science: Find out what pets students have. Research care of
these pets.
- Social Studies: Make a picture of an historical figure
using objects that relate to their achievements.
- Cooking/Snack: Read some of Freymann's books using food and
have snacks of some of the food in the book. Make orange smiles, and
other "creative" snacks
- Art/Drama: Work with the art teacher to feature famous
collage artists. Make a gallery of the students' creations.
- Music/Movement: Make a list of personal characteristics
such as brave, happy, jumpy, stubborn and use charades to act out
the characteristic.
- Technology integration: Using Kid Pix, draw a person or
pet. Use stickers or stamps to show the characteristics of the
person or pet. Write a simile in a text box to go with the picture.
