Impulse

Impulse = area under the curve on a Force/time graph

This is still true if the force is variable:

CHANGE in Momentum

Change in momentum = area under the curve on a Force / time graph

The change in momentum can be due to a small force acting over a long time.

The change in momentum can be due to a large force acting over a short time.

Besides running a car into a haystack or a brick wall think of bringing yourself to a stop

  • by running into a solid dash board or instrument panel
  • by running into a padded dashboard
  • by using shoulder belts.
  • How do these different ways of stopping affect the time required to stop and how do they effect the force you experience as you come to a stop?
