These cartograms show U.S. states and counties sized proportional to 2018 population.
They may be used on their own or as base maps for
visualizing demographic, epidemiological and other variables related to the
human population.
All cartograms were designed by hand to balance the goals of preserving shape while
reducing or enlarging districts according to their population. They feature smooth,
simplified boundaries, regular geometric shapes, natural line continuation, and
exact shape preservation for disconnect features such as Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Cartograms were produced using "Cartogram Studio" software developed by the cartographer
to produce continuous (not blocky) cartograms with full cartographic control. The construction
process took many hundreds of hours.
