Description. 2201 is the first semester of intermediate Spanish. Topics include a review of grammar, and practice in conversation, intensive writing and reading. Prerequisite FLS 1102.
Objectives. Enfoques, while providing an extensive grammar review, is NOT a strictly grammar-driven approach to language learning. Rather, it weave together content language learning and interactive tasks in which information is exchanged. You will develop communicative proficiency in all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Keep in mind that languages are best learned when real-world information becomes the focus of student activities.
Use of Spanish in the classroom. I will use only Spanish in the classroom. If you don’t hear Spanish in your Spanish class, where else will you hear it? I expect you to use only Spanish in the classroom. If you don’t speak Spanish in your Spanish class, where else will you get the chance to practice what you are learning? We do things in class that require the presence and participation of other people. Activities that do not require interaction with other people and that can be done alone are assigned for homework. In this way, you will get the most benefit out of your time in the classroom.
Evaluation Policy: Students are expected to take all quizzes, tests, and exams at the appointed time. Make-ups of announced and unannounced quizzes and exams will NOT be given except in the most extreme cases (verifiable illness, hospitalization, injury accident, etc). Make-ups in these cases may be approved by the instructor ONLY when the student notifies him prior to or during the class period when the exam, etc. takes place or is due (send an e-mail to ccamaya@eiu.edu and follow up with appropriate documents). Unexcused absences from any activity will incur a grade of ZERO (0) and may NOT BE MADE UP. It is imperative that the students keep an accurate report of his/her grades attained in class. If you have any questions about your grades come and see me in my office. Daily and active class participation is essential. --One percent will be deducted from the attendance grade for every absence over 2 (only valid excuses are allowed: phone calls and e mails are not valid unless documentation is provided)

Additional information:
*Cell phone calls and texting are not allowed in this class. Please turn your phone off before entering the classroom. You will be asked to leave if you disrupt class.
*sending me an e mail or voicemail to notify me of an absence does not excuse the absence. You need appropriate documentation for your excused absence.
*do not make medical appointments or other commitments that conflict with this class. It will not be considered a valid excuse unless it is an emergency (i.e. dentist, car, or hair appointments are not excused)
*Students are responsible for mastering material covered when they miss class. Material covered during each class period is clearly identified on the syllabus “schedule.”
*The classroom door will be locked when class starts. Please be on time.
*Your grade reflects your work in class. I don’t give out grades, you earn them.
--No late work is accepted—work left at my mail box or under the door will not be graded.
**If you have a documented disability and wish to receive academic accommodations, please notify your instructor and contact the Office of Disability Services 581-6583 as soon as possible.
*** This class can be taken as an honors class: FLS 2291G. Talk to your professor about it.
Exams and final exam: The format of exams will reflect the proficiency-based approach to class work. Make-up exams will be given only in the case of a documented medical emergency or death in the immediate family.
Homework: I will occasionally collect homework. I will not announce ahead of time which days I will ask for homework, so be sure you bring all assignments in a separate paper ready to be turned in to your professor in class every day. When I collect homework, I may ask for assignments from any days since the last day homework was collected. Except in the case of a documented emergency, I do not accept late homework. Learning another language requires daily preparation and study. You are responsible for what you do and don’t do both in and out of the classroom. How much you improve your abilities in Spanish depends ultimately on you. Completing the homework assigned before each day review of the material in class allows you to benefit most from your time in the classroom. Lab work will be considered in as a grade. You must buy the on-line book immediately to be able to complete your homework (http://vistahigherlearning.com/students/store/spanish-programs/enfoques-3rd-edition.html = $105.00) buy the Supersite Plus WEB SAM CODE.
Quizzes: You will have several short quizzes throughout the semester. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Quizzes can be made up only in the case of a documented emergency.
Participation: Your active participation in class is essential to both your personal success in learning Spanish and to everyone’s success in having a rewarding classroom experience. Absences count against you—you can’t participate if you aren’t in class. You will receive a weekly grade on participation.
Policy concerning cell phones: Leaving your cell phone stowed away during class is a sign of your maturity and integrity. Please turn off your cell phone ringer before you enter the classroom and leave your phone stowed during class. If many cell phones on “manner mode” go off simultaneously, there may be a message from the University’s emergency notification system. Only in this case is it appropriate to check phones. Having a cell phone out during an exam for any reason is strictly prohibited, and I will treat it as a case of academic misconduct. If you believe you have exceptional circumstances (small children, a very ill relative etc.), please let me know.
All assignments are from the textbook Enfoques unless otherwise indicated. Page numbers indicate the page on which an exercise starts and appears in parenthesis. The assignments for a given day are to be completed before class on that day. The activities listed after “escribir” are to be written; they are the activities that you will be asked to turn in periodically for a homework grade. If you miss class, it is your responsibility to find out if there has been any change to the schedule of classes.
