Announcements

The third exam will be Wednesday, December 5.  It will cover Chapter 7 and the material covered in Chapter 8.



Assignments:

This section contains only the written assignments to be submitted.  It goes without saying that you should anticipate the material to be covered and read the relevant sections of the text before class.  It goes even more without saying that you should read the text that pertains to the exercises before attempting them.

All assignments must be typeset in LaTex with the problems in order and organized by section.  Careful work is expected;  submissions that amount to rough drafts will not be looked upon kindly!  All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the designated date unless otherwise noted.

Due Wednesday, August 30.  Assignment 1:  All exercises from section 1.2.  Here is a Latex Template for Assignment 1.
  Final draft due Friday, September 1.

Due Wednesday, September 5.  Assignment 2:  All exercises from sections 1.4 and 2.2.  The problems in section 1.6 may be done for extra credit.  Here is a Latex Template for Assignment 2.  Final draft due Monday, September 10.

Assignment 3: 
Section 3.3 # 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7;  Section 3.5 # 4, 5.  Good draft due Monday, 9/11.  Final draft due Friday, 9/15.

Assignment 4:  All exercises in Section 4.4.  (This is a long one, so get started early!!)  Good draft due Monday, 9/18.  Final draft due Friday, 9/22.

Assignment 5: 
All exercises in Section 5.2.  (We have examined many of these in class!)  Good draft due Wednesday, 10/4.  Final draft due Monday, 10/9.

Assignment 6: 
All exercises in Section 5.4.  (We have examined many of these in class!)  Good draft due Wednesday, 10/11.  Final draft due Monday, 10/16.

Assignment 7: 
All exercises in Section 6.4.  Section 6.7 # 1-16, 18, 19, 22, 23.  Good draft due Monday, 10/23.  Final Draft due Friday, 10/27.

Assignment 8:  Secton 7.4 # 1-6, 10-20.  Good draft due Thursday, 11/9.  Final Draft due Monday, 11/13.

Assignment 9:  Section 7.7 # 1-5, 8, 9;  Section 7.9 # 5-7, 9-12.  Good draft due Thursday, 11/16.  Final Draft due Monday, 11/27.

Assignment 10: 
Section 8.4 # 9;  Section 8.8.4 # 3, 4, 5, 8.  Final draft due Saturday, December 2.

These notes form a book in progress (almost finished!), so please be aware that some revisions may occur as the course progresses.  Updated versions will be posted.

How to Prove It:  A Structured Approach, by Daniel J. Velleman, 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press.  I think you will find this book to be a useful supplementary reference.
