Harrisons' Cyclery
Harrisons' Cyclery's History
Carlos Harrison's father started
repairing bicycles at home in the early 1940's. He opened a store in
1944, which he sold in 1952. He reopened a bicycle/furniture store in
1956, which Carlos and Bev bought in 1971. Carlos and Bev closed out
the furniture part and built a new store on Lincoln Avenue in 1980.
Carlos has sold and repaired chain saws, yard and garden equipment,
and kerosene heaters in the last 20 years, but currently concentrate
on sales and repairs of bicycles.
Nature of Business
Sales and repair of bicycles and sales
of Magic: The Gathering (tm) collectible game cards.
Qualities & Skills Needed for
Employment
Looking for a non-smoking, clean cut
man/woman with mechanical skills for assembling and repairing bikes.
Impact of Changing Technologies
In the 50+ years, Carlos has been
around the bicycle business, almost everything except the name and
general configuration has changed. Modern materials (titanium,
aluminum, cro-moly, carbon-fiber) and engineering have made more
changes in the last 10 years than the previous 50.
Vision for 2020
Charleston will need a
good bicycle store, but Carlos will be retired by 2020, so Carlos
guesses this business would need a new owner.
