History

Illinois Consolidated Telephone Company, originally called Mattoon Telephone Company, was founded by Dr. Iverson A. Lumpkin. After a series of mergers and acquisitions, the company was expanded and was given the present name in 1924. Today, ICTC is a subsidiary of McLeod USA, a Cedar Rapids-based integrated telecommunications provider.

 

Nature of Business

Illinois Consolidated Telephone Company is a local exchange company serving more than 90,000 customer lines in a 3,000 square mile service area. ICTC provides a diverse range of telecommunications products to residential and business customers, ranging from a single line residence to a multi-line business with high capacity voice, data and video needs. As a local phone company, ICTC ranks 24th in total operating revenues and 25th in the number of customer lines among 1,371 telephone companies nationwide. ICTC serves over 11,000 access lines in Charleston, IL which is the second largest exchange in the market service area.

ICTC has 38 central offices housing phone equipment for each exchange, one of which is located in Charleston, IL at 805 Seventh St. For residential and small business needs, ICTC operates a Communications Center at 700 West Lincoln. A customer can visit the Communications Center for all communication needs, from new phone service to cellular and paging. Charleston is also home to Consolidated Market Response, a sister company which provides marketing services nationwide.

ICTC is always looking for skilled and enthusiastic people to join the team. Professional, customer-oriented and of highest integrity, are some of the personal qualities ICTC looks for in employees. Experience in any of the functional area of telecommunications is an asset. Computer skills are required for non-field work.

Telecommunications is one of the fastest growing and changing industries today. Because ICTC's business is telecommunications, the need to stay in step with the newest technology is paramount. This creates a huge challenge, but one that is exciting and fast-paced.

 

Vision for 2020

ICTC is the primary telecommunications provider in the Charleston community today. By the year 2020, ICTC would like to continue in that role, bringing the newest telecom technology to the community with a goal of enhancing the lives of customers and businesses. By 2020, you will see new forms of communication that one can hardly fathom today, much of which will involve faster speeds, more integration of voice, data, video services and more internet applications, all for greater convenience and augmentation of lifestyles and businesses.

For ICTC, a company with roots that extend back 104 years, it's more than providing telecom solutions. It's also contributing to local causes that are important to our customers, giving back to the communities, such as Charleston, where customers have been loyal for so many years.
