Jefferson Elementary
School
History
Jefferson school is the largest
elementary school in the district. It currently has students in
grades preschool through sixth. It sits on the site of the original
Charleston High School which was built in 1868 and burned to the
ground in 1898. The building that replaced it was demolished in the
1917 tornado.
In 1922 the West Wing was added. In
1927 the center portion was built and the East Wing was added in
1963. In the fall of 1987, seven class rooms were added to the North
end of the structure.
The current enrollment as of April 1998
is 861.
