Local Governments

• There are more than 80,000 local governments in the United States.

• Local governments spend most of their money on:

  • Education (kindergarten through high school)
  • Public welfare and health (payments to poor households and support for public hospitals)
  • Highways
  • Police protection

• Local governments provide goods and services such as water, fire protection, and libraries.
