MAT 1330 -- Analytical Trigonometry -- Fall 2014

This syllabus is tentative and should not be considered definitive. The instructor reserves the right to modify it to meet the needs of the class. It is the student responsibility to attend class regularly and to make note of any changes. Be sure you check the class website for sections covered on the exams, homework problems and announcements.

Catalog Description

Credit Hours: 2; Analytical approach to trigonometry, its properties and applications. (Recommended as preparation for MAT 1441G.)

Prerequisites

MAT 1271 or MAT 1400 or placement by department guidelines.

Textbook

  • We will be covering TBA out of "Trigonometry" by Stewart, Redlin, and Watson.

  • Course Objectives

  • Define the six basic trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions, and show understanding of theses definitions by using them correctly.
  • Derive the fundamental properties of the trigonometric and inverse trigonometric problems and use them to solve pure and applied problems.
  • Understand the connections between trigonometric functions, a right triangle and points on the unit circle.
  • Be able to graph trigonometric functions and their transformations.
  • Exam Information

    There will be three exams and the final exam. The dates and sections covered will be posted here. No calculators allowed. Your instructor will grant make-up exams to students for properly verified absences due to illness, emergency, participation in an official University activity, or participation in volunteer emergency work.

  • Exam 1 is (tentatively) scheduled for TBA.
  • Exam 2 is (tentatively) scheduled for TBA.
  • Exam 3 is (tentatively) scheduled for TBA.
  • The final exam will be comprehensive and is scheduled for Section 002 Monday 15 December 2:45pm - 4:45 pm in MAIN 2221.

  • Homework and Quizzes

    There will be homework consisting of online problems on WebAssign and from the book. The due dates, problems and scores will be posted on WebAssign. Click here for information on enrolling in WebAssign. There may be announced and unannounced quizzes and in-class work which will count towards homework points. Since these are part of your homework score, they cannot be made up. No late homework will be accepted. Instead, the lowest homework score will be dropped. Before attempting the homework problems, you are expected to read the sections carefully. You are strongly encouraged to discuss homework problems with your instructor, use the math tutoring service, and to work with your fellow classmates. However, you are expected to write up your own solutions.

    Course Grade

    Your course grade will be determined using the following distributions:

    You are guaranteed a grade of:
    Aif you earn at least 450 points (90%)
    Bif you earn at least 400 points (80%)
    Cif you earn at least 350 points (70%)

    Attendance

    In order to maximize student access to courses, to reduce empty classroom seats, and to ensure smooth financial aid processing, you may be administratively dropped if you have not attended class by the fifth day into the semester, and have not made successful contact with your instructor to explain your absence.

    Students are expected to attend class meetings as scheduled. When an absence does occur, the student is responsible for the material covered during the absence. When possible, the student should notify the instructor in advance of an anticipated absence.
