Dr. Hongshan He (PI)

Dr. He is currently a Professor of Chemistry. He received his Ph.D. in bioinorganic chemistry from Sun Yatsen University in 1996. He was a research faculty at the South Dakota State University for six years working on solar energy research and joined the Eastern Illinois University in the fall of 2013 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to a Full Professor in 2022. He was the lead organizer for three symposia for MRS Meetings in 2013, 2014, and 2016, and an Associate Editor for RSC Advances from 2016 to 2022. He is also a four-time recipient of EIU's ACA (Achievemnet and Contribution Award, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020), and 2019 EIU Graduate School's Excellence in Research Award.
In addition to teaching and research, Dr. He love excesing including running, biking and cooking.

Current Members


Chinedu Okoro is currently a graduate student of chemistry. He received his BSc in chemistry in 2019 from the Federal University of Petroleum Resource, Effurun Nigeria. He was a regulatory officer at the National Agency for Food Administration and Control of Nigeria from 2019 to 2020 and was a QC officer at Eloben Cosmetic Industry Limited from 2020-2022. He came to EIU in 2023. He loves solving problems and playing football.







Foster Amoah is a graduate student in Chemistry. He received his BSc.degree in chemistry from the University of Education, Winneba in Ghana. After completing his undergraduate studies in 2019, Foster served as a service personnel at the Clinical Engineering Department for Ghana Health Service in the Ashanti Region for one year. He then gained employment with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to teach chemistry for two years. During his free time, Foster enjoys reading and playing TV games.




Andrew Brinkschroeder is currently a sophomore at EIU majoring in biology. He is doing summer research with Dr. He on photocatalysis. He is supported through a grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc.







Anthony Aya is currently a freshman majoring in chemistry and physics. He has been working with Dr. He on nickel-catalyzed photocatalytic reactions since the spring of 2023. His research is supported through a grant from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Founds
