Student Teaching Abroad (COST Program)
General Information (be aware
that this is not an exhaustive list of requirements)
- An EIU degree in history with
teacher certification in social science means that you will be certified to
teach all of the social sciences (history, economics, geography, political
science, psychology, and sociology/anthropology) in grades 9-12 in Illinois
public schools. You do not need extra "endorsements" in those areas.
- Take SED 2000 as soon as possible;
delay in completing SED 2000 could delay your acceptance into the teacher
education program, and thus delay your graduation.
- You must pass the Test of Academic Proficiency in order to be admitted to the teacher education program.
- Take a college math course as
soon as possible; a C or better in a college math course is required for admission
to the teacher education program. MAT 1270 does not count as a college math
course for this purpose, but MAT 1271 does (you will still need a General
Education math course in order to graduate).
- You must take SED 3330 and EDP
3331 before you may take SOS 3400.
- You must have a 2.75 cumulative GPA and a 3.00 major GPA by the beginning of the semester before you
student teach in order to student teach.
- You must have a 2.75 cumulative GPA and a 3.00 major GPA in order to enroll in SOS 3400.
- You must pass the content-area
test (Social Science: History) before you can student teach. This is not an EIU policy, but a state law. You will find a
link to study guides for this test here.
