Ch 19, Temperature

Summary

Thermal equilibrium means that two objects have the same temperature.

On the Celsius temperature scale, water melts into ice at 0oC and water boils into steam at 100oC.

For most gasses under a wide range of conditions, the pressure in a constant-volume gas thermometer goes to zero at - 273.15oC. This temperature is known as absolute zero. A useful temperature scale starts with this temperature as zero. This absolute temperature scale is also known as the Kelvin temperature scale .

The zeroeth law of thermodynamics: If two objects are each in thermal equilibrium with a third object, then they are in thermal equilibrium with each other.

As most materials are heated, they expand;

An ideal gas can be described by

PV = n RT

as its equation of state.
